- [Dale Lane](https://dalelane.co.uk/blog/) - A friend & former colleague - Dale is a very talented polyglot software engineer with a passion for machine learning. He was the key person who connected me to the IBM Watson team back in the day and helped me to get to where I am today career-wise. He is the developer of [MachineLearningForKids.co.uk](https://machinelearningforkids.co.uk/) a free technical resource that helps children get started with ML and he's also [written a book about it](https://www.google.com/books/edition/Machine_Learning_for_Kids/9R6hzQEACAAJ).
- 🤬 [Garry Newman](https://garry.tv/) - Garry is famously the 'G' in GMod -a creative sandbox mod for Half Life 2/source engine. When I was a teenager Garry was a huge role model for me and his blog has always been quite entertaining. He does not post very often these days.
- 🤬 [Kev Quirk](https://kevq.uk/) - Kev is an IT professional and one of the maintainers of [Fosstodon](fosstodon.org/) - a [free and open-source software](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_and_open-source_software) focussed [Mastodon](https://joinmastodon.org/) instance. Kev posts about a variety of topics of interest about IT, the internet and other random stuff.
- [James Sutton](https://jsutton.co.uk/) - A friend & former colleage & flatmate after leaving uni, James works in IBM's emerging technologies centre in the UK. James is a very talented physical IoT specialist with a lot of experience with low energy messaging systems - he was one of the maintainers for Eclipse Paho MQTT project.
## Newsletters
Some newsletters that I follow:
- [Exponential View](https://www.exponentialview.co/posts/) is a newsletter compiled by Azeem Azhar, a technologist/futurist who writes about an eclectic mixture of topics including climate breakdown, AI, crypto, VC funds and other "emerging technologies". He has also recently published a book [Exponential](https://bookwyrm.social/book/235006). I find Azeem has a fairly economically conservative point-of-view that I don't always agree with but he does good research and I've discovered some good articles and videos through his newsletter.
- [Matt's Thoughts In Between](http://tib.matthewclifford.com/) a newsletter compiled by Matt Clifford - one of the cofounders of [Entrepeneur First](https://www.joinef.com/), a fairly well known incubator for startups. Like Azeem above, Matt covers tech futurism in general and various bits of VC news. I find his content is generally slightly more technical than Azeem's which I like.
- [Big by Matt Stoller](https://mattstoller.substack.com/) a newsletter about corporations, multinationals and monopolies. It's not all roses, particularly in the current climate of big tech, but there are some encouraging David vs Goliath stories coming through.
- [NLP News](https://newsletter.ruder.io/) a deeply technical newsletter about current state-of-the-art developments in the NLP space by [Sebastian Ruder](https://ruder.io/), maintainer of [NLP Progress](https://nlpprogress.com/) and researcher at DeepMind who I've bumped into a couple of times at NLP conferences. Sebastian publishes infrequently but his updates are usually good quality summaries of conference events which provide a useful compass for the direction of the NLP community at that time.
## Podcasts
Links to podcasts that I listen and have enjoyed.
- [Three Bean Salad](https://linktr.ee/threebeansalad) a podcast featuring comedians Mike Wozniak, Henry Paker and Ben Partridge, an irreverant and surreal romp through what might otherwise be pretty dull topics like "exercise" or "sleep" or "magic". It reminds me a bit of the sort of humour that Eddie Izzard or Ross Noble might produce. Highly recommend **5/5**
- [Off Menu](https://www.offmenupodcast.co.uk/) another comedy podcast with comedians James Acaster and Ed Gamble - they interview comedians and celebrities about their favourite foods and tell funny stories. **4/5**
