Another fairly routine week. I spent quite a lot of it feeling somewhat poorly as I predicted [last weekend](/2025/2/16/weeknote-07). I decided to work from home all week to avoid spreading the plague and our planned trip to see Chris McCausland didn't pan out as Monday and Tuesday were the two days that I felt worst. I started to recover towards the end of the week but unfortunately Mrs R started to feel ill and had to take some time off work Thursday and Friday.

At work I am starting to feel a lot more useful to the team now. This week I got to do some hands on delivery, run some departmental interviews and help with goal setting for my department. I'm starting to build a good rapport with my new line reports too. I spent some time learning about using various bits of AWS that I'd not experienced before including [CodeBuild](https://aws.amazon.com/codebuild/) for CI/CD and [SAM](https://aws.amazon.com/serverless/sam/) configuring serverless functions and REST api gateways. It is really nice to feel useful and to be able to help out with the team. I'm looking forward to going in to meet up with some of my colleagues this week.

While I've been feeling off, I've been doing a lot of reading. I finished [The Lincoln Lawyer](https://bookwyrm.social/book/202343/s/the-lincoln-lawyer) and started reading the next book in the series [The Brass Verdict](https://bookwyrm.social/book/202390/s/the-brass-verdict). I'm also still playing Dead Cells since its easy to dive in and out of. I'm still working my way through High Potential and this week we started the new series of White Lotus. We are a few episodes behind on the new series of Severance hich I'm eager to rectify but have been struggling to get Mrs R to join me.

While we've been cooped up at home, we've also been thinking about trips we'd like to take later in the year. We've booked to go up to London for my birthday to see [The Comedy About Spies](https://www.mischiefcomedy.com/whats-on/the-comedy-about-spies/london/) which is the latest offering from the Mischief Theatre Group who are famous for The Play That Goes Wrong amongst other belly-laugh-inducing shows. We've also been shortlisting workmen to come and replace the tired carpet in our living room with some new laminate flooring. We also sat down and did some budgetting which is boring but necessary. I'm still a big fan of You Need a Budget which costs me about £7/mo paid annually and integrates with all my bank accounts. However, for forecasting, nothing beats a good old spreadsheet.

Since I started feeling better I've been doing a few odd jobs around the house that needed doing. I [replaced the broken battery in Mrs R's ASUS ROG Ally](https://brainsteam.co.uk/notes/2025/02/23/1740311540/) which stopped charging and was making some scary fizzing noises before. I also tidied out some cupboards in the kitchen, listed some items on freecycle and even took a break to build [a mastodon/activitypub bot](https://outiebot.jamesravey.me/) that generates [Severence Outie Facts](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q99KYhD9BpQ).

I'm getting back into cooking which I find is quite a nice meditative activity where I don't look at a screen for an hour or two at a time and gives me a bit of headspace. I use Mealie to manage my recipes and plan our meals for the week. I tag all the recipes with the name of the book that they came from so that when it's time to make them I can quickly find them. This week I made a healthy peanut/satay style curry and we substituted coconut milk for coconut 'drink', which is effectively diluted coconut milk, to reduce the sugar content. It turned out very well and we'll definitely be making that one again.

This week I'm hoping we'll both be back to health and heading into our respective offices as normal. Mrs R is out with her sister one evening and I'm out with some former colleagues for dinner another night. I hope to continue feeling useful at work and, should the feeling take me, I may do a bit of messing around with the [Hoarder API](https://hoarder.app/) as I'm interested in whether I can generate ebooks and e-newspapers to read on my kindle and kobo like I can using Wallabag.
