+        "content": "<img src=\"https://i0.wp.com/brainsteam.co.uk/media/2023/08/202308201808678.jpeg?w=600&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"James looking pretty happy sat with a tray of cake in front of him\" />High Tea taking on a double meaning at the top of the Spinaker Tower<p>Stuff that happened this week:</p>\n<ul><li>\n    I worked on some internal projects and wrote about my experiences of setting up <a href=\"https://brainsteam.co.uk/2023/8/14/stable-airbyte-sync/\">Airbyte</a> for some client use cases.</li>\n<li>Mrs R and I celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary with an afternoon tea at the top of Portsmouth\u2019s <a href=\"https://www.spinnakertower.co.uk/\">Spinnaker tower</a>. The food was delicious and the view was spectacular. Thankfully it was a lovely sunny day for it.</li>\n<li>\n    I spent some time in our Whiteley office and went up to our London office on Friday for a couple of  meetings.</li>\n<li>\n    On the way home from London I made the very expensive mistake of losing my car keys which meant walking 30 minutes home to get my spare key and walking back to the station to get the car. I then had to shell out \u00a3400 for a new key from the car dealership after being advised by an independent auto locksmith that my car\u2019s lock is \u201ctoo fancy\u201d for them to be able to reliably break into. I won\u2019t be doing that again in a hurry.</li>\n<li>Mrs R and I finished Season 2 in our Justified rewatch as we prepare for Justified: City Primeval. Margo Martindale certainly deserved <a href=\"https://youtube.com/watch?v=HAyO0QNFifE\">her award</a> for her portrayal of a bone-chillingly cold villain.</li>\n<li>\n    I found some cool new feeds to follow:\n<ul><li>\n        <a href=\"https://tracydurnell.com/mind-garden/\">Tracy Durnell</a> \u2013 a freelance sustainability consultant who writes about all sorts of interesting stuff in her digital garden</li>\n<li><a href=\"https://elizabethtai.com/\">Elizabeth Tai </a>\u2013 an essayist, sci-fi writer and digital garden</li>\n<li>Shout out to <a href=\"https://thoughtshrapnel.com/\">Doug Belshaw\u2019s Thought Shrapnel </a>which I\u2019ve been following for a while but which has recently come out of hiatus.</li>\n</ul></li>\n<li>I\u2019ve just finished the 2nd book in William Gibson\u2019s Sprawl series</li>\n</ul><p>This week we have a few office days planned and a few house chores to do. I\u2019ll be up in London attending the <a href=\"https://www.meetup.com/london-apache-airflow-meetup/events/295297770\">Airflow Meetup</a> on Thursday evening.</p>",

+        "content": "<p>Another busy week here as \u201cQ3\u201d gives way for \u201cQ4\u201d in the business world.</p>\n<p>Early this week we had a company retreat. On Monday we invited middle and senior management teams and on Tuesday we invited the whole tech team including fully remote staff. We rented a huge AirBnB with a games room and a projector and even a hot tub (although only our CEO and one of the braver account managers went in the tub, the rest of the team stood around awkwardly).</p>\n<p>The retreat was an opportunity to try to build some good working relationships between different parts of the business since we\u2019ve had so many new starters in recent days. It was kind of cool seeing different people, who wouldn\u2019t normally spend time together, hanging out and chatting over beers.</p>\n<p>On Wednesday I gave a CTO update at my first board meeting since we raised funding. The segment went well and we had a discussion about where machine learning and AI are useful and where they are not.</p>\n<p>The rest of the week was quieter and I got to work from home for a couple of days which was great because I was absolutely shattered after all of that socialising.</p>\n<p>Outside of work this week I published a few short blog posts and short comments about some of the articles that I read.</p>\n<p>I wrote some philosophical stuff about AI:</p>\n<ul><li><a href=\"https://brainsteam.co.uk/bookmarks/2023/09/25/elegant-and-powerful-new-result-that-seriously-undermines-large-language-models1695627930/\">Elegant and powerful new result that seriously undermines large language models \u2013 Brainsteam</a></li>\n<li><a href=\"https://brainsteam.co.uk/posts/2023/09/27/crappy-printers-and-crappy-content1695806638/\">Crappy Printers and Crappy Content \u2013 Brainsteam</a></li>\n</ul><p>I also wrote about <a href=\"https://jamesravey.me/posts/2023/09/30/turbopilot-obit/\">my decision to stop developing TurboPilot</a> which I still have mixed feelings about. However, it does free up some mental bandwidth for some other side-projects and concentrate attention into fewer places as far as open source AI code assistants are concerned.</p>\n<p>Earlier in the week I was playing Mass Effect 2 as part of the Legendary re-release. I definitely preferred the gunplay in the first game but, the story in the 2nd game is kind of fun. It leans more into a cheesy/stereotype storyline.</p>\n<p>I also spotted that Nvidia shipped some <a href=\"https://developer.nvidia.com/vulkan-driver\">new beta drivers (535.43.10)</a> that allow my RTX 4070 to finally run Starfield reasonably well via Proton. I\u2019ve been streaming it to my Steamdeck and getting 50-60 FPS on \u2018High\u2019 settings, dropping to ~30FPS for densely populated areas. I suspect that there will be more performance gains to be had over the coming weeks.</p>\n<p>I wrote a <a href=\"https://memos.jamesravey.me/m/221\">TIL</a> about automatically unlocking your Gnome session remotely with a shell comand which is very useful if I want to launch Starfield on my SteamDeck without going upstairs to physically unlock my desktop PC which has locked me out.</p>\n<p>I put off my trip up to visit my parents in Shropshire since my Mum and her partner both have COVID. I will try to visit later in the month. Instead, we had a pretty quiet weekend which was appreciated since I had a pretty active week and I needed some introvert energy recharging time. Instead, I\u2019ve been playing Starfield, reading, writing and snoozing. We\u2019ve also tackled a few house chores that needed sorting out.</p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been making some small changes to my habits when it comes to writing and journaling that probably deserve their own full blog post. The most interesting thing has been trying to write more of my thoughts down either on paper or in Memos. Keeping track of more of the things that I do reminds me of just how much stuff I achieve in a given day. If I\u2019m beating myself up for being unproductive, it\u2019s useful to reflect on some of this stuff.</p>\n<p>Next week will be another busy one again. I\u2019m in London for some work events during the middle of the week and I\u2019ve got a few calls starting to fill up my diary.</p>\n<p>We also need to make our quarterly migration to CostCo as we\u2019re starting to run low on some of our bulk items and we\u2019re planning to go to the cinema and make use of our Cineworld memberships at least once this week.</p>",
