Took a little while to get home last night after a train broke down across some points and blocked a bunch of platforms at Waterloo. Silver lining is that I get my ticket refunded and it's a Friday so leisurely work from home day today.

A shorter note this week as we are currently on holiday and I'm dictating my note to my phone.
I've been on my new role at Thomson Reuters three weeks so I thought it was the perfect time to go on holiday and forget everything that I've learnt so far (or rather we had pre-booked this holiday months ago and having been transparent about it during my interview process, my new manager has been pretty understanding about it).
On Tuesday I went up to London for work but was able to meet up with my uni friend Emily for a cuppa. I haven't seen Em since before COVID but she was in London on something of a mini tour, she performs as [Louise and the Feathers](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pW9W-Uevk2o). It was lovely to catch up. I'm starting to enjoy my new routine of going in on Tuesdays and lunching with my immediate team. I would normally go in twice a week but since we were preparing for our holiday I worked from home Weds and Thurs. This allowed me to pop out during break times and in the evenings in order to pick up last minute supplies for our holiday and for our house sitter. We caught the train up to Gatwick on Thursday evening for our flight early-ish on Friday morning.
Upon arrival in Barbados we were driven by coach straight to our ship without having to go through customs or any of the airport security. Our bags were brought straight to the ship and brought on board by the porters which was really cool. It took a few hours for the bags to find us in our cabin, which did lead to a little bit of anxiety, but everything was unpacked and put away by 9:00 p.m local time which was great because we were quite jet lagged and ready for bed.
Yesterday we had a full day in Barbados which allowed us to get off and explore Bridgetown. We walked 40 minutes from the cruise terminal to the nearby Carlisle bay, which is a popular sandy beach. We had an obligatory paddle in the sea and sat to dry off before walking back to the ship.
We don't normally bother with paying for Wi-Fi on a cruise ship since it's quite expensive and we actually quite enjoy the isolation from the internet. Normally we would cruise within the EU, which means that our mobile phone roaming works for free or for a small fee. However, roaming rates outside of the EU and in particular in the Caribbean are quite steep. A few days before we left, I read [Terence Eden's review of Roamless](https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2025/01/review-roamless-travel-esim/) who offer a pay-as-you-go SIM card that can be used in any country and offers relatively good rates for local data. Mrs. R had assumed that her grandfathered mobile contract would allow her to use her roaming package whilst here but quickly learnt that was not the case when they charged her £45 for downloading about 45 MB of data in the first 10 minutes of landing. Thankfully they cut off her internet access preventing her from spending hundreds or even thousands of pounds. I encouraged her to sign up for Roamless as well, but we also plumped for an onboard Wi-Fi package for the first time ever. I've been quite impressed with the speed and quality of the link and you can even stream videos over the network. This means that we only need to use Roamless when in port for an emergency which alleviates any anxiety we might have about being cut off or separated whilst on land.
We are at sea today and due to land in caracao tomorrow. We are looking forward to having a quieter day at sea and getting some reading and gaming done.
Initially I had planned to bring my steam deck with me and Mrs. R had planned to bring her Asus ally. However, the ally seems to have forgotten how to talk to its battery, meaning that it cannot be used unplugged and my steam deck takes up a lot of space in my hand baggage. We both decided we would bring our Nintendo switches which have been gathering dust for a couple of years since we got our more recent handhelds. I have been thoroughly enjoying playing with my switch and it has been quite surprising to ReDiscover how light the device is and also how capable it is. Sure, it can't play cyberpunk or a modern AAA release, but it has no problem playing some of the indie games that I enjoy like stardew valley and some of the remix and remasters that have come out recently such as red dead redemption 1.
I finished watching black doves on the flight over and I really enjoyed it. The ending offered some closure but also left the door open for a follow-up series. I also started watching High Potential. This is a serial crime drama following a [Monk](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mftbaaU82Uc) or [Psych](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E52xhbKMvZQ) archetype where the main character is an unlikely neuro-atypical savant who teams up with the police to solve murders and crimes. The show stars Kaitlin Olson who is best known for her role as Sweet Dee Reynolds from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. It is quite nice seeing her playing a more likeable character but who still retains a bit of a sassy attitude.
I'm also still reading Sarah Kendzior's They Knew which was written at the tail end of 2021 but still offers very relevant history lessons about the state of things in the US. I will probably switch to something a bit more light hearted for my next read, especially since we are on holiday.
Next week we will be taking in the Carribbean and trying to relax and stay switched off for a bit.
I started by saying this post would be shorter than usual but it ended up being fairly long after all. Voice dictation is a pretty cool application of AI for sure! Until next time....!

This week [I started my new job in Thomson Reuters' Labs team](https://brainsteam.co.uk/2025/1/12/first-week-at-tr/) and I spent a couple of days up in London's canary wharf settling in and meeting my team which meant a few hours on the train. On both days trains ran relatively smoothly although on day 2 I was 20 minutes late getting to the office in the morning which meant I could claim 1/4 of my ticket back. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the team have been very welcoming and even presented me with some swag on the first day including a very smart TR Labs hoodie.

A lot of my week has been taken up with onboarding activities but I've also started building out an Obsidian vault for my work notes which is completely isolated to my work hardware and backed up using approved corporate cloud backup solutions. I've been taking quite a few hand-written notes and manually pulling them into obsidian after the fact. Something that a self-hosted version of [PenParse](https://brainsteam.co.uk/2024/12/23/penparse-update/) running on my company laptop would be great for. Unfortunately due to a mix up during onboarding I've been issued with a Dell laptop running Windows 11. I haven't used windows as my daily driver for at least 15 years at this point. It is every bit as frustrating as I remember it to be. I'd be fine with the laptop it if I could install Ubuntu but I don't think that would fly with the IT department. However, my manager has kindly agreed to look into getting me a Mac as soon as possible.
During my commutes, I've been using my Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 with a custom version of Lineage OS to watch tv shows on the way home. Unfortunately on Tuesday my tablet seemed to stop playing so I ended up buying myself a [Tab S9 FE](https://www.samsung.com/uk/tablets/galaxy-tab-s/galaxy-tab-s9-fe-wifi-gray-128gb-sm-x510nzaaeub/) which has a fair bit more RAM and runs modern android. My Tab S3 lasted a good 8 years so if I can get similar innings out of my new tablet I'll be pleased.
Mrs R and I have been trying to eat relatively healthily and we've been making heavy use of our slow cooker and "lazy" recipes that we can just throw in a pot and leave to stew or reheat in order to cheat ourselves into behaving and not ordering takeaways. This has been particularly challenging on days where I've been up in London but we have managed pretty well. I'm using [Mealie](https://mealie.io/) to manage recipes and generate food plans and shopping lists for the week.
We are also starting to prepare for a cruise holiday that I booked long before I knew I was switching jobs. This has involved trying on lots of clothes and realising that my tuxedo no longer fits. I'll have to nip out and buy one in the next couple of weeks before we go.
This week I've been continuing to read [Hunt the Stars](https://bookwyrm.social/book/427233/s/hunt-the-stars) and [Make Change That Lasts](https://bookwyrm.social/book/1811820/s/make-change-that-lasts). Whilst on the train home I've started watching [Black Doves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R0d2jW7a-I) with Kiera Knightly and Ben Wishaw which I've been thoroughly enjoying despite middling reviews from critics. I'm also still playing my way through [Rise of the Tomb Raider](https://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/391220/) on the Steam Deck and I decided to reinstall Command & Conquer Remastered on my PC after I spent a couple of days listening to [the rather excellent soundtrack by Frank Klepacki and the Tiberian Sons](https://open.spotify.com/album/1BdrAyFCmYxsu3aGzQwIt0?si=9c7f6pclRSKE5ulL9QjTUQ) this week.
This coming week I suspect I will spend more time bedding in and learning stuff at TR. I'll most likely be doing a couple of days a week from London most weeks. I'm also hoping to catch up with some of my friends and former colleagues from Filament over lunch in nearby Whiteley. We'll be continuing our holiday preparations and trying to keep some of our new habits going.

Week three of 2025 has already been and gone, time flies! This week was my 2nd at Thomson Reuters having [started last monday](https://brainsteam.co.uk/2025/1/12/weeknotes-02/). I'm starting to establish a pattern of working from the office on a Tuesday and a Thursday and from home the rest of the time. This means heading up to London on those days on the train.
On Tuesday I had a number of intro meetings with more folks in my new team. On Thursday I did more of the same but I also nipped out to meet a friend and mentee who had also just changed job roles for lunch in London Bridge. We went to Padella which I'd not tried before, my take was "a more hipster [Prezzo](https://www.prezzo.co.uk/)" but it was enjoyable. It was lovely to catch up with my friend for the first time since I left my job and wish them look starting their new job in a couple of weeks time.
I also had a meeting with the London-based director of TR Labs about helping to run an internal Unconference event this summer which I'm quite excited about. It should be a good opportunity to meet up with other disparate members of the company and do something a bit out of my comfort zone.
Train travel in the UK isn't always roses but I'm trying to adopt a stoic attitude towards inevitable delays and cancellations. My trip on Tuesday was pretty uneventful but getting home on Thursday turned out to be a little bit trickier. I was initially sat on a train going nowhere but I decided to get off, get some fresh air and something to eat and get the next available train and I went up to the mezzanine to take a photo of the crowds. My decision was vindicated when the train I had been sat on was cancelled and everyone else scurried off to figure out their options too.
![a very large crowd of people stood on the station concourse at London Waterloo.](https://brainsteam.co.uk/media/2025/01/17/1737103260_0.jpg)
During my work from home days this week I also met lots of my new teammates via zoom calls and continued with my onboarding and education stuff. On Wednesday I was able to nip out to meet up with some of my former colleagues for lunch. It was great to see everyone and to catch up. I've been doing a few odd jobs around the house and trying to chase down some gremlins in my home network that have made my powerline connection fairly unreliable. I tried moving my home server downstairs to sit next to the router but found the fan noise to be irritating in the living room and moved it back upstairs.
I'm still watching Black Doves on my commutes with 2 more episodes to run. I'm also continuing to slowly make my way through Z Nation which is a comfort watch and, in my humble opinion, much superior to The Walking Dead. I finished [Hunt the Stars](https://bookwyrm.social/book/427233/s/hunt-the-stars) on the train home on Thursday and started [They Knew - How a Culture of Conspiracy Keeps America Complacent](https://bookwyrm.social/book/501549/s/they-knew-how-a-culture-of-conspiracy-keeps-america-complacent) after reading [an essay by Sarah Kendzior](https://sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/the-end-of-days-inn) earlier in the week that introduced me to her writing. It's quite heavy going, so I also started [The Malevolent Seven](https://bookwyrm.social/book/1012338/s/the-malevolent-seven) at the same time for some light relief.
I've been quite busy settling into my new routine, meeting lots of people, new and old, and learning about lots of new systems that I'll be working with. Therefore, I've not really felt like doing any dev work in my spare time for the last couple of weeks. I've noticed a few new tickets being opened against my [FreshRSS FlareSolverr plugin](https://github.com/ravenscroftj/freshrss-flaresolverr-extension/issues) which I haven't had the brain capacity to really deal with. I also have some plans and ideas for improvements and extensions I'd like to make to this website too. For example, I am planning to add support for checking in to venues to this website so that I can keep a better record of different restaurants that I've visited.
## Next Week
Mrs R and I are starting to prepare for a holiday that we had booked for a long time (the timing isn't great considering I just started my new role, but my new manager has been very understanding). We're packing our bags, making sure the cats and cat sitter have enough food and supplies and generally preparing for our trip. I'll be popping into London on Tuesday where I hope to meet up with another old friend who I haven't seen for a while. I'm also preparing my tablet and kindle for some long flights and a couple of weeks without much internet access.

Just a really short week note this week since Mrs. R and I are still on our holiday. We're having a relaxing time on a number of different Caribbean islands. I'm deliberately trying not to stay up to date with the global news. Although what I have seen has brought me out in a rash. This week we have seen beaches and rum distilleries Galore. Next week I imagine it will be more of the same. We've been keeping in touch with the cat sitter who reliably informs us that the terrible twosome are continuing to be adorable and cause chaos at home. We return to the the rainy reality of life in England on Friday.
