I spent a few days looking for them and then eventually gave up and had to buy a replacement pair. Fast-forward to this week when my phone was showing that it was connected to my earbuds even though I knew mine were safely tucked away in their case. I tried re-seating my earbuds in their charger to make them turn off and my phone briefly connected to another set of buds - so they were off the whole time!
I realised what must have happened: my old pair is still somewhere in the house and the battery in the charging case must have run out. When this happens, the charging current to the buds is cut, and they assume that they have been removed from the case and turn themselves on. I spent a couple of hours frantically running around the house trying to find my old buds, toggling bluetooth on and off on my phone to see if I could hear the buds make their little "connected" tone. Unfortunately it was midnight on a weekday and I had work the next day, so I relented and went to bed. Sadly I've not been able to re-connect to the old set since but now that I know that they are in the house it's actually pretty infuriating not being able to find them. I'm sure they will come out of hiding one day when I'm clearing out the garage or redecorating or something like that.
