Podcasts I'm listening to in late 2024 posts /2024/12/16/podcasts-late-2024

I thought I would also write about my podcast listening habits after reading Laura and Dr Doug's posts on the subject.

Like Dr Doug, I typically listen via AntennaPod on my phone if I'm out and about. I normally listen whilst out on my daily walks at lunch time or sometimes if I'm on a train or a flight and a TV show or Movie or book doesn't appeal.

Pods I 've been listening to recently include:

  • Three Bean Salad is one of my staples and the only podcast that I'm a regular paying subscriber to. Its a surrealist comedy podcast featuring a panel of three regular hosts including Mike Wozniak of Taskmaster and Junior Taskmaster, Henry Paker children's illustrator and Ben Partridge who does other funny pods including the Beef and Dairy Network. The guys normally talk about weird and wonderful topics interspersed with jingles and songs. I'd describe the humour as surreal observational' kind of like Ross Noble or Suzy Izzard's standup. This year they started doing amateur film reviews for paying subscribers. I particularly enjoyed their take on Dune 2.
  • Tower 4 - a fiction/drama series about a guy who goes to live in a fire lookout tower in a national Park. and some supernatural gangs on that he is subjected to and involved in. I was initially pulled in whilst looking for stories about going somewhere quiet and Isolated for a bit and I stayed for the drama. Some of the themes are pretty upsetting though (drug abuse, domestic violence).
  • The Missing Crypto Queen. - I Just got into this one in the last couple of weeks and I'm enjoying it a lot. It's a journalist's investigation into One Coin which was a huge crypto scan that didn't even involve crypto (the 'currency' was just a traditional database application). OneCoin's charismatic founder Dr Ruja Ignatova went missing in 2018 and has never been seen again. She is still on the FBI's most wanted list. It gave me similar vibes to A very british cult which I listened to around this time last year and very much enjoyed.

I've also caught odd episodes from:

  • Feel Better, Live More, another commonality with Dr Doug. I'm not an avid listener but sometimes I catch the odd episode.
  • Better Offline - tech critic Ed Zitron's podcast where he talks about some of the themes and issues that he's been exploring on social media or in his newsletter. I've listened to a few bits and bobs but I typically read his newsletters rather than listen to the pod.
